International Day of Yoga: How One Grassroots Initiative Uses Movement to Support Refugees

The International Day of Yoga on June 21 is more than a celebration of breath, balance, and flexibility. It is a global reminder that movement—especially when done together—can bring healing, build confidence, and strengthen communities. This year, in connection with our work on Integration of Refugees Through Sport, we are proud to spotlight the inspiring efforts of Yoga and Sport With Refugees.
Founded in 2017, YSR began as a small community initiative on the Greek island of Lesvos. Today, it has grown into a powerful grassroots movement supporting thousands of refugees and asylum seekers each month across four locations: Lesvos, Athens, Ioannina, and Paris. Their mission is simple but impactful: to provide free access to sport and movement activities for displaced people, while also empowering them to take leadership roles within their own communities. A defining feature of YSR is its model of refugee-led coaching. Over 35 refugee coaches now lead daily sessions in yoga, boxing, football, climbing, dance, swimming, and more. These are not just workouts—they are safe, welcoming spaces that help individuals rebuild self-esteem, process trauma, and feel part of something meaningful.
YSR’s yoga sessions, in particular, offer participants a rare chance to slow down and reconnect—with themselves and with others. In a life often marked by uncertainty and upheaval, yoga becomes a steadying force. The benefits go far beyond the mat: improved mental health, stronger social ties, and a renewed sense of dignity and purpose. In fact, according to Harvard Health Publishing, yoga can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by up to 39%, making it a powerful tool for emotional resilience in vulnerable communities.
YSR’s approach strongly resonates with our vision—a world where sport and physical activity are diverse, empowering, and accessible to all. Their grassroots work beautifully reflects the kind of community-driven impact we aim to foster through projects like Integration of Refugees Through Sport, which promotes local capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and inclusive practices across Europe. YSR stands as an inspiring example of how movement can become a catalyst for social connection, leadership, and belonging.
